Letter To The Bolton News - Feb 11

Our politicians sometimes defy logic. No, I’m not joking. They do! On Thursday (10 February 2010) David Davis introduced a debate in the Commons so that Members could have a cosy little chat about whether people detained at Her Majesty’s Pleasure could have the right to vote.

Europe says they should under European human rights laws. In fact our Government will be in breach of the Act if it doesn’t comply. The Honourable Members, flush-of-pocket, right on their side, of course, voted the idea down handsomely.

For myself, I’m sorry I couldn’t, at this point, care less.

Where I have a problem is the complete disregard our Members of Parliament have for the electorate of this country. As if this really matters in the real world, the world we’re living in today. A world where I’m constantly being told by the ruling Party’s that this country is in dire need of fixing; that the ills of the past have to be put right.

Thousands of people are losing their jobs. The old, the young and the vulnerable are being deprived of the services they need. Police numbers are being cut with criminal abandon. Our soldiers are being sent to ever more dangerous places and not looked after on their return. The NHS is being lacerated into a fragmented shadow of its past glory. The variety in life that helps to sustain it and keep it healthy – libraries, swimming pools, parks etc – are being closed or sold off. Councillors up and down the country are being forced to make impossible choices between who gets a service and who doesn’t. The list goes on.

And what do MP’s spend their very valuable and expensive time debating: whether or not a criminal can vote or not? As has been said: you couldn’t make it up!
